About CEJS Fellowships
One of the primary goals of CEJS is to support the scholarship of Seattle University students in environmental justice and sustainability endeavors. Our 2024 SU Gives campaign focuses on raising funds for the Gary L. Chamberlain Student Research Fellowship so that we can establish a permanent endowment fund.
This CEJS student fellowship honors Dr. Gary Chamberlain who taught at Seattle University from 1979 until 2009 in the Theology and Religious Studies Department. Dr. Chamberlain was a beloved teacher who contributed to the growth of the Environmental Studies Program and encouraged countless students to pursue their passion for environmental advocacy. He also connected theology and ecology through his many works including his books Because Water is Life: Catholic Social Teaching Confronts Earth’s Water Crises and Troubled Waters: Religion, Ethics and the Global Water Crisis.
Hear it from the students
"One of the many reasons I chose to continue my education at Seattle University is because of their commitment to sustainability. The CEJS gave me an opportunity, as a fellow, to be involved before I even moved to Seattle. CEJS, my research advisor, and fellow students have provided me with opportunities to grow as a climate justice advocate and remind me daily that institutional efforts can make positive changes."

"I am happy to say I am currently working as a land use attorney. The research I was able to complete thanks to the Gary L. Chamberlain fellowship helped me become more informed in that area of the law. The fellowship allowed me to have the in-depth understanding I currently possess and made me much better equipped to deal with policy nuances and issues as they come up in my career."
