About CEJS Fellowships
One of the primary goals of CEJS is to support the
scholarship of Seattle University students in environmental justice and
sustainability. The 2025 SU Gives campaign seeks to raise funds for
the Gary
L. Chamberlain and Francis student research fellowships.
Gifts towards these fellowships will provide Seattle University students the
opportunity to research solutions to global sustainability challenges through
scholarship and experiential learning with support from an SU faculty mentor.
Hear it from the students
Through Seattle University's CEJS Fellowship, I have the opportunity to develop 'Hyperobjects & Climate Hostages' - a multifaceted project that integrates film, the psychosocial method of social dreaming, and various mental health practices to reimagine our relationship with the climate crisis. This Fellowship allows me to experiment with new ethical filmmaking methodologies, design inclusive spaces for emotional processing, and contribute to emerging climate narratives that prioritize justice, care, and collective healing. CEJS Fellowship does so by providing funds, mentorship, resources, and a collaborative platform for a meaningful exchange between the awardees. Supporting the CEJS Fellowship program means investing in risk-taking, visionary, interdisciplinary work that seeks to bridge science, activism, and the arts to inspire systemic change.

"The
Gary L. Chamberlain Fellowship stands out for its flexibility, allowing
students to creatively engage with social justice across multiple disciplines.
Through this program, I had the opportunity to explore environmental justice
beyond the classroom and lead research relevant to the Seattle community.
I am incredibly grateful for this experience—not only did it help me develop
hard skills in data analysis and project management by leading my research
project, but it also prepared me to take on challenges with a deeper, more
holistic perspective as I pursue a career in science. Supporting this
fellowship is an investment in students who are eager to tackle environmental
and social challenges, turning their knowledge into meaningful action."

Receiving the
Gary L. Chamberlain Fellowship from CEJS was the best experience presented to me
during my graduate program at Seattle University. The funding from
the award has allowed my artistic partner, Fatema and I, to bring to life
Engrained is Our Story: a living seed bank, storytelling research project,
narrating how Washington State's diverse communities are protecting more
sustainable and just food sources, and how these communities' efforts are
essential in the face of industrial agriculture's disregard to the climate
crisis. Almost as important to us as the funding, CEJS has welcomed us into an
inspiring group of other faculty and students fighting for environmental
justice. I am beyond grateful for the tools and resources gifted to us through
the CEJS community. With this gratitude, I want to advocate that your gift will
help other students access this same space, and funding, so they can also
manifest important research projects during their times at Seattle
University.
