The moving image is central to our contemporary lives. From our phones to our tablets, televisions, and cameras, we turn to the screen for entertainment, information, and pleasure.

The Film and Media program explores our image-saturated culture by:
  • Educating students about the history, aesthetics, technologies and industries of visual culture as well as how to make their own creative films
  • Helping students develop critical skills in writing, independent research, and historical analysis and to acquire key media literacy skills for the future
  • Teaching classes in screenwriting; documentary, remix and experimental filmmaking, and opportunities to take advanced classes in producing, editing, sound, and cinematography in production studies
  • Teaching classes in animation, crime cinema, science, fiction, horror, noir, ecocinema, film and science, media studies and many other topics in film and media studies
  • Encouraging students to connect with SU's mission for social justice by telling stories of the Northwest or volunteering with a nonprofit organization on local or national issues to help create social change
  • Creating opportunities for internships in a wide range of corporate settings, including Amazon, Boeing, Starbucks, and Microsoft, and with leading film organizations like the Seattle International Film Festival, Reel Grrls and Northwest Film Forum
  • Culminating study trips for seniors that go to Sundance or other leading film festivals
Donations to Film and Media fund will be used to help students achieve academic excellence by providing students with small grants to cover some expenses they might have when completing film projects, research, or attending film festivals. Any donations will allow students to take full advantage of these exciting educational opportunities.
