We believe that the arts of language and the tools of literacy are necessary not only for self-understanding, self-expression, and self-realization, but for full participation in social, cultural, and political life. Our curriculum allows students to grapple with some of the most interesting questions of literary and cultural history, engage profound and intractable questions of justice and value, and become thoughtful and active citizens of the university, nation, and world.
The English Department has
- An exciting and diverse curriculum in Literature and Creative Writing in small classes with personalized attention;
- SU’s undergraduate research journal, SUURJ, and the university’s literature and arts magazine Fragments, in which students can gain valuable editorial and publication experience;
- The university’s largest number of long-running summer study abroad courses in Paris, Dublin, and London;
- Distinguished visiting writers every year to teach our creative writing students;
- Professional formation for students built into our curriculum and complemented with career workshops and grad school sessions, internships, other preparation for a wide range of jobs after graduation.
Donations to the English Department fund would help us continue to build our efforts to support all students, in particular students of color, and to expand our support for student scholarship, creative work, professional formation, and department programming.
